“I always wanted to do that.”

She lay crooked in his arm, her head comfortably pillowed on his shoulder, both of them flat on their backs in the park. It was an idyllic day, the kind of day a child draws with crayons. Bright, hard blue sky, vivid green grass, and a sparkling pond full of ducks completed the picture. Far overhead, seagulls wheeled and soared on air currents, and the crisp air carried the fresh, salty scent of the ocean.

“Do what?” he murmured, sleepy beneath the warm rays of the sun.

“Fly.”

He stroked her hair absently. “I could arrange that.”

“I know you could,” Violet smiled. “That isn’t the point. I always wanted my super power to be flying, instead of force fields and invisibility.”

“I thought you didn’t want to have powers,” Budd asked, quirking a brow.

“Not at first. But think about it, wouldn’t it be great to just fly away from everything?” she asked, stretching her arms up to the heavens. “Just fly away from all the troubles and problems until you hit the sun...”

Buddy bit his tongue. His scientific mind could rattle off a thousand and one things that would happen before you flew into the sun, and not one of them pleasant. Most of them ended in death.

“It doesn’t matter,” Violet said finally, folding her arms over the gentle curve of her pregnancy. “I’d much rather stay here with you.”

He kissed his wife and turned his scientific mind off, if only for a few moments.

Rain dripped down from the eaves, dripped onto the ground, seeped into her soul. Everything was cold and wet. She huddled down on the steps, curled tightly against her knees. Her mascara was running down her cheeks, her stockings run to ribbons. A pair of heels, one of them broken, sat neatly next to her. Thunder boomed overhead.

Her long dark hair was soaking wet and plastered to her back and neck. She felt boneless and curiously numb, as though every ounce of energy had been sapped out of her.

A car pulled up to the curb, and she picked up her chin.

Before the car had even stopped moving fully, the door flew open and he got out of the car. Despite her best, deepest intentions, a glow of warmth permeated the chill and numbness.

“Get in the car,” he snapped.

“Why?” Violet said back, her voice hot with anger she didn’t know she possessed. She realized just then that she was pretty pissed off. “You know, I think I’m doing fine on my own.”

“This is doing fine?” Buddy shouted. “You’re sitting here in the pouring rain, with no way to get into your apartment, no way to call a tow truck, and a boyfriend who kind of just walked out on you. This isn’t doing fine, Vi. This is doing pretty shitty.”

“Shut up!” Violet launched herself off the steps, barefoot and in pain in so many more ways than physical. “Just shut up! I offered you a chance, you conceited asshole, and you spat in my face!”

“I didn’t spit in your face, I said you needed time –“

“I don’t need time!” She seized the lapels of his jacket, shaking him, dragging him closer, pushing him away. Lightning cracked overhead. “I don’t need time, I made up my mind so long ago, Buddy!”

“This is a phase,” he said coldly, those baby blue eyes flat and dispassionate. “A rebellious teenage phase. You’re just interested in me because your parents hate me. Now get in the fucking car.“

“And then what?” she spat, releasing him. “I just go with you to your place, sleep on the couch, wake up in the morning and get a new key cut for my apartment? Is that it?”

“That’s what you should do,” Buddy said.

She stepped near him, big violet eyes open and vulnerable. Rain streaked down her face. “I never do what I should do, Buddy. Not when it comes to you.”

Don’t say my name, don’t do it...

“Don’t look at me like that,” Buddy turned away. “I can’t...”

“You can’t what, Buddy?”

“I can’t say no to you when you do that!” He finally snapped.

She kissed him.

And then they weren’t Syndrome and Invisigirl, they were just a couple kissing in the rain.

“No.”

“Please?” she begged, giving her those adorable blue eyes. “He won’t make a mess, I’ll take care of him and everything!”

“Simone...” Buddy rubbed the bridge of his nose. “We can’t get a puppy. You know Allison is allergic, we can’t have pet hair.”

“But he’s so cute,” Simone pleaded, hitching the fluffy mutt higher in her arms. It was enormous already, all big ears and paws and waggy tail. The dog was amazingly docile and lay there like a doormat while four year old Simone hugged him to her chest. “Pleeeeease?”

“I said no, Simone, put him back.”

“Aw, don’t you think we need a dog?” Violet came up from behind and linked arms with him. “Every family needs a dog.”

Buddy smiled wryly at her. “I’m getting double teamed, this isn’t fair.”

“Allison will be fine,” Violet assured him. “The doctor said regular exposure to pet dander could help her allergies anyway. Besides, they’re for free.”

“Their vet bills aren’t,” Buddy pointed out. “And neither is the food.”

Allison came over, her short orange hair swinging in her face. “Daddy, let Simone get the dog,” she said, smiling the cheeky little girl smile. “He’s so cute.”

“Your allergies,” Buddy sighed, but he knew he was outnumbered.

“Please, daddy?” The girls chorused.

“Fine, get the fleabag,” Buddy muttered.

“Thank you, Daddy!” Simone squealed and hugged the puppy tighter.

Buddy swore the dog winked at him.

A/N: Fluffy nonsense of the most obtuse kind. Pretty much me just loving Synlet all over again. ^^

Random thought: have you ever seen any actors you could totally see in an Incredibles live action film? I think Dichen Lachman looks almost exactly like Mirage but other than that I can't think of anyone. Can you?
